Death is a subject that everyone fears because they associate death with their end and hope for a new beginning. In The Stone Angel, Hagar is no different. When she faces the reality of growing old she is faced with a journey. Through her journey Hagar goes through the five different stages leading up towards death: denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. The novel demonstrates each of Hagar's steps along the difficult journey

People should be aware of the struggles of the elderly so that they will feel comforted. This will help them overcome the struggle of aging which is a difficult time in a person’s life. Hagar had trouble admitting to her need for comfort, which was something she really wanted deep down although she never showed it.
