Observations
Before Experiment:
· Barium Hydroxide. Ba(OH2) . 8H2O
- The barium hydroxide appeared to have a slight tint of blue giving it the appearance of an off white substance.
- The substance needed to be crushed or grinded down into finer pieces to allow for better reaction with the ammonium thyocyanate, NH4SCN.
- Therefore a mortar and pestle was used to grind down the barium hydroxide into finer pieces.
- When the substance

- 4.03 grams of NH4 SCN(s)
- 10.04 grams of Ba(OH)2.8H20(s)
Calculating the heat of reaction (DHr)
DHr = -(Q/n) where “n” is the number of moles
DHr = -(1959.166/0.063) n=(mass / molar mass)
DHr = 31097.9 Joules / mole n=(4.8/76.2)
DHr =31.0979 Kilojoules / mole n=0.063 moles
The heat of reaction for this experiment is 31.0979 kilojoules per mole!
