I¹’m sure that now we can safely say what was avant-garde in the art world a hundred years ago, but when the art is from the present, recognizing the avant-garde gets difficult. This is where the distinction between avant-garde and critical avant-garde is made. Critical avant-garde is the understanding of art as it occurs and being able to make that separation in the present.
