The Watergate affair was an event in the history of the United States in July 1972, when a series of scandals which involved President Richard Nixon. In July 1972 people in Nixon’s reelection committee were arrested in Democratic Party headquarters, in the Watergate apartment building in Washington, DC after they attempted to tap telephones. After completing the investigations, the House Judiciary Committee recommended three articles of impeachment: obstruction of justice, abuse of power, and failure to comply with congressional subpoenas. On August 5th Nixon admitted that he had ordered the FBI to stop investigating the Watergate burglary. On August 9th, 1974, he became the first president to resign. One month later his successor, Gerald Ford pardoned him.
