Humans often need guidance, understanding and care to grow up as intelligent, well functioning adults. In Harper Lee’s novel she suggests that sometimes it is better to parent on instinct rather than inexperienced advice. Atticus is a good father because he lets his children be independent while still setting reasonable guidelines.

Atticus is a good parental figure in his children’s life because he can show them how to live their lives well. This novel teaches people that your instincts and judgment should supercede other’s when it comes to your parenting. Without trust and love, everyone grows up to be a person with poor character.
