In the following essay I will analyse the persona in Nadine Gordimer’s story “The
Moment before the Gun Went Off” I will debate whether this character; Marais is consitent
and reliable. Furthermore I will explain whether the persona’s views coincide with those of
Nadine Gordimer the author.

Assuming that
the implied author is Nadine Gordimer, her views will in no way coincide with those of the
persona.
The persona did (to himself) acknowledge the labourer as his son; thus he became his
friend and they shared the sign language. Yet the labourer always reminded the persona of his
defiance of the law; the Immorality Act. Therefore the persona “accidentally” killed his son.
