The film “The Graduate” is seemingly divided into two sections, Benjamin’s relationship with Mrs. Robinson and his relationship with Elaine. These two relationships, although very different, are inter-related. An integral part of the film is that Benjamin is forced to choose between the two women, representing different morals and values. Both Ben and Elaine are framed by a separate window of the bus, the emphasis placed firmly on the space between them. Thus, instead of the bus becoming a unifying symbol, it becomes the thing that separates them, leaving the viewer to question Benjamin’s happiness with his decision.
