The extremely democratic nature of Weimar was worlds apart from what Germany had previously experienced. It was too sudden a change from Wilhelm II and Bismarck’s style of leadership. A right-wing intellectual journal, Tat, summed up the apparent feeling of the nation;
“These times long for authority, they are tired of Liberal ideas.”
