Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
I. The meaning of the hunting scenes.
Two Possible Interpretations
1. Hunted animals convey connotations of evil.
- Bercilak hunts these animals- therefore he is hunting and
destroying evil.
2. Many animals were thought to have qualities of human emotions,
spirituality, and even intelligence. These human qualities help the readers
draw a parallels between the hunt, happening outside of the castle; and the
“hunt” happening inside between Gawain and the Lady

is upset- but asks
for a kiss before she leaves. She then asks for a gift- like his glove-
but he tells her it wouldn’t be proper for her to have his glove.
She calls him the noblest knight alive. She tries to give him a ring-
but he won’t accept it. So she gives him her girdle- which is
suppose to be magical-- to protect him against the Green Knight.
