The authors of these articles cited several studies to support their argument that African-Americans are the main targets of police brutality. Americans of any race can become victims of police brutality but statistics show that 87% of all documented police brutality cases in 1995 involved African-Americans. “African-Americans are disproportionately the victims of police misconduct. The figures reveal that Black Americans have a three times greater chance than whites of being killed by a police bullet” (Hayes, 1993, p. 42).
I feel that this research is both necessary and informative. It is obvious that police brutality is a major problem. Hopefully, this research will open the door to future research on how to prevent and detect police brutality with in our police departments.
