The violent crackdown was by no means a one way affair, but the motives behind why such an event should even have occurred are essentially selfish. The Chinese government was fundamentally preserving their own existence, and the preservation of the communist ideal. The leaders of the party were indeed afraid of the power of the people, and through their genuine fear came the ruthlessly harsh crackdown.
