“Insanity- a perfectly rational adjustment to an insane world”
- R.D. Laing
The main characters’ apparent madness or irrational behavior plays an important role in the book “One Flew Over the Cookoo’s Nest” by Ken Kesey. The purpose for the madness in One Flew over the Cookoo’s Nest is slightly more obvious than in other books. The plot revolves around it. The madness is necessary for the discovery of the societal problems.

you judge the origin of the madness from a different point of view, sometimes the cause isn’t always what you would expect it to be. In “One Flew Over the Cookoo’s Nest”, the cause of the insanity is society and the different pressures put on the men in it. They aren’t simply “mad,” they are driven to a point to exhibiting insane characteristics in response to the lack of acceptance in society.
