It is again a metaphor for life, and means that no matter what the boy may do his eventual awakening into adulthood is just as inevitable. He realises that he cannot remain protected by his innocence forever. The boy thinks it is "not fair" that this should happen and he is disappointed, showing that life does not always fulfil our desires.
