The two had initially both belonged to the Oxford Group, a nonalcoholic fellowship headed by an Episcopal clergyman, Dr. Samuel Shoemaker. Dr. Shoemaker and an old friend Ebby together helped Bill to get sober. Bill was also helped by working with other alcoholics.
