However, in Winston’s world, it was an everyday occurrence to loose someone and not have the police look for them (because the police made him disappear) or anyone mourn for him. The most disturbing thing about the world of 1984 is the lack of compassion for human life. People accept a death as easily as reading the Chess Committee roster and finding it to be a name shorter than before.
